Baji Prabhu Deshpande, the Maratha Lion!!!

Baji Prabhuji Deshpande fights like a Lion against Mughal forces. Being ambidextrous Baji Prabhuji could wield a sword in both hands, out numbered 1 to 100 he killed enough Mughal soldiers and buys enough time to allow Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to escape into nearby Vishalgarh fort after breaking out of a siege on Panhala fort. A cannon was to be fired to announce Shivaji Maharaj's safe arrival at Vishalgarh. Once he hears the cannon go off, he is relieved and dies in the hands of his companions. Long Live the fame and glory of Baji Prabhu Deshpande. Har Har Mahadev!!!

It is to be noted that Vishalgarh was also under siege by another Mughal force. Shivaji Maharaj had to break this siege force before he could enter Vishalgarh.

The pass held by Baji Prabhu Deshpande. Now a memorial stands where he fell fighting, to honour his valour

A memorial has been set up at the mountain pass known as 'Ghodkhind' or Horse Pass now aptly named Paavan Khind where Baji Prabhu Deshpande fought off the Mughal forces. As you will notice the enemy force had to climb up to the high position which Baji Prabhu held.
